Remote Rail Bridge Replacement

Myshak Crane & Rigging Ltd. (MCR) was contracted to execute the removal and replacement of an existing rail bridge located in a remote and logistically challenging area near Jasper, Alberta. The project scope required not only the dismantling and installation of a critical piece of rail infrastructure but also the precise coordination of lifting operations within a strictly scheduled rail closure window.

Access to the bridge site presented a significant obstacle, there were no existing roadways suitable for the mobilization of the heavy equipment required for the project. Traditional transport methods were not feasible due to the location’s remoteness and the surrounding terrain. In response to this challenge, MCR in collaboration with J&S Bridge, developed and implemented an innovative logistical strategy to support the scope of work.

To overcome the access limitations, MCR mobilized a Liebherr LTM 1400 all-terrain crane by rail. The crane was carefully loaded onto a rail car and shunted into position at the bridge site. This solution required detailed pre-planning, precise execution, and close coordination with the railroad company to ensure the safe and timely transport of the crane and support equipment. Once on site, the crane was offloaded, configured, and rigged to execute the lifts required for bridge removal and reinstallation.

The bridge replacement was performed within the tightly defined rail block, during which all rail traffic was halted to allow for safe operations on site. MCR’s experienced personnel executed the removal and installation work within the scheduled timeframe, ensuring there were no delays to resuming essential rail service. The project was completed without incident, on budget and within the allocated rail closure, with no disruption to subsequent rail operations.
