Overview

Myshak Crane & Rigging Ltd. (MCR) was contracted to support the construction of a new chocolate manufacturing facility in Stony Plain, Alberta. The project involved the hoisting and installation of 200 concrete precast panels, forming the structural envelope of the building. MCR was responsible for supplying the necessary lifting equipment and experienced personnel to complete the panel erection efficiently and safely.

To execute the hoisting operations for this project, MCR chose to utilize a Liebherr LTM1250-5.1 All Terrain crane, selected for its capacity, reach, and maneuverability for a busy construction site. Alongside the crane, MCR provided skilled operators and rigging personnel to perform the lifts in accordance with the engineered lift plans and site safety protocols. The installation required precise coordination between the crane crew and the other trades on site to ensure each precast panel was lifted, positioned, and secured, according to the project’s structural requirements.

This project faced several challenges typical of spring construction in Alberta. Unstable ground conditions, including soft and muddy terrain, presenting immediate concerns for crane setup and mobility. In addition, the erection schedule was tight, with daily progress targets that needed to be met to maintain alignment with the broader construction timeline. Intermittent weather disruptions, particularly high winds and rainfall, posed further risks to lift planning and execution, often affecting safe lifting windows.

MCR worked proactively with the general contractor to adjust and maintain lift schedules around adverse weather, often needing to remain flexible and modify start times to avoid potential high winds or rainfall. To address the soft ground conditions, matting was brought in and placed beneath the crane to provide stability and distribute ground pressure, ensuring safe lifting operations. Daily coordination meetings were held to proactively address any weather-related concerns, potential delays, or site conditions to ensure work stayed on schedule while maintaining a strong focus on safety.

Despite the environmental and scheduling challenges, the precast panel installation was completed on time and without incident. MCR’s ability to adapt to Alberta’s volatile climate, changing site conditions and maintaining clear communication with the project team ensured the successful and safe erection of the building. This project stands as another example of MCR’s commitment to reliable execution, operational flexibility, and safety excellence in complex construction environments.
