Overview
The BMO Centre Expansion stands as a defining milestone in Canada’s event infrastructure landscape. Located in Calgary’s Culture & Entertainment District on the historic Stampede Grounds, the project introduced 565,000 square feet of new state of the art facilities, transforming the venue into the largest conference facility in Western Canada and the second largest nationally. Completed on schedule and on budget, the expanded center officially opened its doors on June 5, 2024, cementing its status as a cornerstone of Calgary’s economic and cultural growth.
Myshak Crane & Rigging Ltd. (MCR) was engaged to execute the complete steel erection scope for this landmark development. The scope encompassed the precise and coordinated lifting and placement of 10,500 tons of structural steel over three levels of construction. MCR’s role was pivotal in ensuring structural elements were installed safely, efficiently, and aligned with the project’s schedule.
To support the project’s logistical demands, Myshak Sales & Rentals Ltd. (MSR) engaged in a rental agreement with the client, providing exclusive access to a two acre yard and modular trailer on Myshak property in southeast Calgary. This dedicated space enabled the off site fabrication and assembly of major steel trusses, streamlining site operations and keeping the project on schedule. An 80 ton Tadano rough-terrain crane, provided as a bare rental unit by MSR, was used on site for lifting operations throughout the duration of the project. This equipment played a critical role in maneuvering and erecting complex structural components with precision and reliability.
NexGen Transportation was responsible for hauling the fabricated steel trusses from the staging yard to the job site. The coordination between MCR and NexGen ensured that trusses arrived on time and in sequence, facilitating uninterrupted steel erection and minimizing site congestion.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in the form of global supply chain disruptions and inflationary pressures, the project remained firmly on track. Through strong planning, close collaboration with stakeholders, and a steadfast commitment to safety and efficiency, MCR delivered its scope without incident or delay. The ability to maintain project integrity during a volatile economic period speaks to the resilience and professionalism of the entire team involved.
The completed BMO Centre now boasts over 1 million square feet of event space, including 102,500 square feet of new exhibit hall space, 68,000 square feet of adaptable meeting rooms, a 50,000 square foot ballroom, and 118,500 square feet of back of house support space. The facility is already home to world class events such as the Global Energy Show and serves as a critical asset in Calgary’s long term vision for tourism, commerce, and cultural engagement.
Myshak’s role in the successful expansion of the BMO Centre underscores its capability to support major infrastructure projects through dependable equipment solutions, logistical expertise, and an unwavering focus on safety and schedule.
