Cross-Border Transportation of Oversized Modular Building

Overview

NexGen Transportation was contracted to manage and execute the cross-border transport of an oversized electrical building from Peace River, Alberta, to a power generation facility in the Greater Houston area. The laden configuration measured 21 feet in height, 24 feet in width, and 215 feet in length, with a total weight of 567,200 pounds. Spanning two Canadian provinces and nine U.S. states, the move required exceptional logistical precision and coordination.

Given the scale and complexity of the relocation, the project involved a 12 month planning phase followed by a 4 month execution period. Every aspect of the move was carefully engineered to ensure full regulatory compliance and operational feasibility. Coordination efforts included engagement with 89 different authorities, ranging from utility providers and railway companies to law enforcement, local stake holders, civil companies, and permitting agencies across each jurisdiction.

To identify a viable route, two NexGen employees conducted full time route studies over a 2 month period, assessing and addressing any vertical, horizontal, or structural limitations. It was deemed that portions of the selected route required civil infrastructure improvements in order to accommodate the load’s weight and dimensions. Prior to travel a comprehensive permitting strategy was developed for both Canadian and U.S. jurisdictions, securing approvals on a county by county basis to ensure uninterrupted progress across the entirety of the route.

Throughout the U.S. leg of the journey, three full time bucket truck crews accompanied the load to manage overhead utility lines ensuring the route remained clear and navigable while mitigating any potential risks. The team executed a tightly coordinated schedule designed to minimize disruptions while maintaining compliance with transportation regulations and infrastructure limitations. Cross-border logistics were handled with precision, allowing the load to move smoothly through each stage of the journey while meeting all necessary procedural and operational standards.

The modular building was delivered safely, without incident, and on schedule. This project underscores NexGen Transportation’s proven expertise in managing and executing large scale, cross-border heavy haul operations. It also highlights the critical importance of meticulous planning, regulatory knowledge, and disciplined execution that is required in the successful delivery of complex specialized transport solutions.
