RTU Replacement Project
Business Unit
Myshak Crane & Rigging Ltd.
Overview
The Parkland Mall required the removal and replacement of a rooftop unit (RTU) as part of a scheduled mechanical system upgrade. The scope of work involved the precise removal of the existing RTU, the placement and installation of a new unit, and the responsible disposal and recycling of the decommissioned equipment. Due to the size and location of where the unit needed to be removed and replaced, a high-capacity crane was necessary to execute the lifts safely and within the constraints of the project site.
A Liebherr LTM 1400 All Terrain Crane equipped with a luffing jib was selected for this project. Its capabilities allowed for the necessary reach and lift capacity required to access the rooftop while maintaining a safe working perimeter. In addition to hoisting operations, Myshak Crane & Rigging Ltd. (MCR) provided transportation services to remove the old RTU from the site and ensure it was properly recycled in accordance with environmental and client standards.
One of the challenges encountered was the location designated for crane setup. The only viable staging area was directly adjacent to the mall’s loading docks, which were required to remain open and operational throughout the duration of the project. These docks support the ongoing deliveries which are critical to the facility’s overall operations, any disruption to this workflow was unacceptable.
To address this limitation, Myshak Crane & Rigging Ltd. (MCR) implemented a detailed coordination plan in collaboration with facility management. Delivery schedules were reviewed and accommodated, and crane assembly, specifically the installation of the luffing jib, was strategically scheduled within a narrow 1.5 hour window. This approach ensured that construction activities continued to progress without disrupting the facility’s logistics or productivity.
The RTU was successfully removed and replaced meeting the established schedule and remaining on budget. The retired unit was transported offsite and responsibly recycled, fulfilling both the technical and environmental requirements of this complex project. The successful completion of this project highlights the importance of careful planning, expert equipment utilization, and proactive communication, reflecting Myshak Crane & Rigging Ltd.’s commitment to providing safe, reliable, and efficient execution.
